Marlee Beth Matlin (born August 24, 1965) is an American actress. She is the youngest, and only deaf performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which she won for Children of a Lesser God. Her work in film and television has resulted in a Golden Globe award, with two additional nominations, and four Emmy nominations. Deaf since she was 18 months old, she is also a prominent member of the National Association of the Deaf.
Her book I’ll Scream Later was quite a success as well as some of her acting gigs:
- She won awards for ‘Best Actress’ from both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes for her role in Children of a Lesser God where she beat out greats like Jane Fonda, Sigourney Weaver, Kathleen Turner, and Sissy Spacek.
- Recently she has appeared on the TV show Switched At Birth along with many other cameos and recurring roles including ‘The L Word’, ‘The West Wing’, ‘Picket Fences’, and ‘Reasonable Doubts’.
- She was the runner-up winner in season 11 of the Reality Show ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and advanced through half of season 6 of ‘Dancing With The Stars’.
